Procedure

Following a procedure similar to that described in Example 1(c), 0.5 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in dioxane was added to a solution of 281 mg of 3-dimethylamino-1-{2-[4-(2-hydroxyphenyl)butyl]phenoxy}-2-propanol [prepared as described in step (b) above] in ethyl acetate. The reaction mixture was then concentrated by evaporation under reduced pressure and the resulting oily residue was dissolved in ethyl acetate; the solution was then cooled. The crystals which precipitated were collected by filtration and dried in vacuo, to give 156 mg (yield 50%) of the title compound as colorless crystals, melting at 122°-124° C.
