Procedure
Following a procedure similar to that described in Example 1(c), 0.23 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in dioxane was added to a solution of 216 mg of 3-dimethylamino-1-{2-[4-(4-methoxyphenyl ) butyl]phenoxy}-2-propanol [prepared as described in step (b) above] in 10 ml of ethyl acetate. The reaction mixture was then concentrated by evaporation under reduced pressure, and the resulting residue was dissolved in 10 ml of ethyl acetate and then allowed to stand. The crystals which precipitated were collected by filtration, to give 191 mg (yield 80%) of the title compound as colorless crystals, melting at 97°-98° C.
