11 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in ethyl acetate were added, whilst ice-cooling, to a solution of 14.5 g of 2-(2-{2-[2-(3-methoxyphenyl)ethyl]phenoxy}ethyl)-1-methylpyrrolidine [prepared as described in step (a) above] in 100 ml of ethyl acetate, and the resulting mixture was allowed to stand at room temperature. The crystals which precipitated were collected by filtration and dried in vacuo, to give 3.0 g (yield 81%) of the title compound as colorless crystals, melting at 109°-110° C.
