0.2 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in dioxane was added dropwise to a solution of 220 mg of 4-{2-[2-(3-methoxyphenyl)ethyl]phenoxy}-1-methylpiperidine [prepared as described in step (a) above] in 20 ml of ethyl acetate, and the mixture was allowed to stand at room temperature. The crystals which precipitated were collected by filtration and dried in vacuo, to give 170 mg (yield 69%) of the title compound as colorless crystals, melting at 147°-148° C.
