0.3 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in dioxane was added to a solution of 300 mg of 2-(2-{2-[2-(2-methoxyphenyl)ethyl]phenoxy}ethyl)-1-methylpyrrolidine [prepared as described in step (a) above] in a suitable amount of ethyl acetate, and the resulting mixture was concentrated by distillation under reduced pressure. The resulting solid residue was recrystallized from ethyl acetate, to give 186 mg (yield 56%) of the title compound as colorless needles, melting at 143°-145° C.
