Procedure

0.226 g of 3-(N,N-dimethylamino)-1-[2-(6-phenylhexyl)phenoxy]-2-propanol [prepared as described in step (b) above] was dissolved in a small amount of ethyl acetate, and 0.25 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in dioxane was added to the solution. The resulting mixture was then concentrated by distillation under reduced pressure. Pentane was added to the resulting concentrate, and the mixture was shaken and then concentrated by distillation under reduced pressure. This operation was repeated twice, and the resulting oil was dried in vacuo, to give 0.237 g (a quantitative yield) of the title compound as a colorless oil.
