Procedure

0.31 g of 3-(N,N-dimethylamino)-1-[2-(7-phenylheptyl) phenoxy]-2-propanol [prepared as described in step (b) above] was dissolved in 10 ml of ethyl acetate, and 0.33 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in dioxane was added to the solution, whilst ice-cooling and stirring. The resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for a few minutes, after which it was concentrated by distillation under reduced pressure. Pentane was added to the resulting concentrate, and the mixture was shaken and then concentrated by distillation under reduced pressure. This operation was repeated twice, and then the resulting oil was dried in vacuo, to give 0.34 g (a quantitative yield) of the title compound as a colorless oil.
