A solution of N′-(2-cyano-5-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)-N,N-dimethylimidoformamide (3.29 g, 1.5 mmol) in dimethylformamide (33 ml) and potassium carbonate (4.14 g, 30 mmol) was reacted with 1-bromo 4-chorobutane (3.86 g, 2.5 mmol) at 60° C. for 2 hours. Water was added to the reaction mixture which was then extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phase was dried (magnesium sulphate), concentrated and the residue was purified by chromatography on silica gel. Elution with dichloromethane:ethyl acetate (8:2) then increased polarity to (6:4) yielded N′-[5-(4-chlorobutoxy)-2-cyano-4-methoxyphenyl]-N,N-dimethylimidoformamide as a white solid (3.7 g, 80% yield):
