Procedure
To a solution of 1-benzyl-3-(4-chloro-phenyl)-4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-1H-pyrrolo[3,2-c]pyridine (Example 25; 0.11 g) in 1,2-dichloroethane (5 mL) was added 18 μL of acetic acid, 26 μL of acetaldehyde, and 0.10 g of NaBH(OAc)3. The mixture was stirred at RT for 15 h. The mixture was diluted with CH2Cl2 and washed with satd. aq. NaHCO3 (2×). The combined organic layers were dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo. Chromatography on SiO2 (1% 2 M NH3 in MeOH/CH2Cl2) afforded 0.02 g of the title compound. The product was dissolved in Et2O and treated with excess 1.0 M HCl in Et2O to afford 0.02 g of the corresponding HCl salt. MS (ESI): exact mass calculated for C22H23ClN2, 350.15; found, m/z 351.2 [M+H]+, 353.2 [M+H]+. 1H NMR (500 MHz, CD3OD): 7.37-7.27 (m, 7H), 7.19-7.17 (m, 3H), 5.17-5.13 (m, 2H), 4.48-4.37 (m, 2H), 3.85-3.76 (m, 2H), 3.45-3.23 (m, 2H), 3.00-2.84 (m, 2H), 1.38 (t, J=7.1 Hz, 3H).
