To a solution of 4-hydroxydiphenylmethane (0.77 g, 4.18 mmol) in anhydrous DMF (22.5 mL) at 0° C. was added a 60% dispersion of NaH in mineral oil (0.23 g, 5.75 mmol) portionwise over 5 min. The resulting slurry was stirred at 0° C. for 45 minutes before a solution of tosylate from step 1 (1.50 g, 4.22 mmol) in DMF (11 mL) was added dropwise over 5 min. The subsequent mixture was stirred at 60° C. overnight. The reaction mixture was poured over ice and then concentrated under reduced pressure. The crude residue was extracted into ethyl acetate and sequentially washed with water, saturated aq. NaHCO3, water and brine. The combined organic layer was dried anhydrous Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated in vacuo to afford the title compound (1.8 g, >100%) as a tan oil;
