7-Methoxy-4-methyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-benzo[1,4]oxazine (11.17 g, 0.625 mol) in 400 mL of 1,2-dichloroethane was stirred at 0° C. under nitrogen. Aluminum trichloride (8.3 g, 0.625 mol) was added in portions, followed by dropwise addition of acetyl chloride (4.9 mL, 0.678 mol). The reaction mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 2.5 hours. Aluminum trichloride (3 g) was added, and the reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 24 hours. The reaction mixture was poured into ice and 550 mL 3N HCl was added. The aqueous mixture was extracted with methylene chloride, and the combined organic layers were dried (MgSO4), filtered, and evaporated under reduced pressure to yield 10.48 g of 1-(7-Methoxy-4-methyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-benzo[1,4]oxazin-6-yl)-ethanone. (M+H)=222.
