Procedure

Using a 20% solution of sodium ethoxide in ethanol (150 g), benzamidine hydrochloride (34.5 g), diethyl malonate (32 g) and ethanol (500 ml), the same procedures as Reference Example 11-(1) are repeated to give crude 4,6-dihydroxy-2-phenylpyrimidine (31.5 g).
