Metanilic acid (5 mmol, 0.9 g), 3-oxo-2-(2-oxo-2-phenyl-ethyl)-butyric acid ethyl ester (5 mmol, 1.2 g), sodium hydroxide (5 mmol, 0.2 g), and tosic acid (0.1 g) were combined in ethanol, then heated under reflux. The unreacted metanilic acid was precipitated on ice and filtered from the reaction mixture. The filtrate was evaporated to yield an oil, which was purified over silica gel. After standing, the named product solidified as purple crystals (m.p. 94 C.-96° C.).
