A solution of (R)-ethyl 1-[3-(1-tert-butoxycarbonyl-4-piperidyl)propionyl]-3-piperidinecarboxylate (3.99 g) in a mixture of methanol (10 ml), tetrahydrofuran (10 ml) and water (10 ml) was added lithium hydroxide (1.27 g) under stirring at 0° C. After stirring at ambient temperature for 1 hour, the mixture was acidified with 5% KHSO4 aqueous solution and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with water, brine and dried over MgSO4, and evaporated in vacuo to give (R)-1-[3-(1-tert-butoxycarbonyl-4-piperidyl)propionyl]-3-piperidinecarboxylic acid (3.34 g).
