Phosphorus oxychloride → 2-Chloro-3-phenylpyridine
Reaction equation
[C:1]1([C:7]2[C:8](=O)[NH:9][CH:10]=[CH:11][CH:12]=2)[CH:6]=[CH:5][CH:4]=[CH:3][CH:2]=1.P(Cl)(Cl)([Cl:16])=O>>[Cl:16][C:8]1[C:7]([C:1]2[CH:6]=[CH:5][CH:4]=[CH:3][CH:2]=2)=[CH:12][CH:11]=[CH:10][N:9]=1Participants

Procedure
Using the procedure given above in Example 1, 3-methyl-2(1H)-pyridone (VIII) was refluxed in phosphorus oxychloride followed by work-up to give a 17% yield of 2-chloro-3-methylpyridine (VI).
