Procedure
To a carbon disulfide solution containing 53 g of aluminium chloride and 26.2 g of thioanisol was added dropwise under an ice-cooled condition 24.0 ml of γ-chlorobutyryl chloride. After 1 hour and 30 minutes, the reaction mixture was poured into ice-water and the insoluble matters were collected by filtration, dissolved in chloroform. The chloroform solution was washed with water and dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate, and concentrated to dryness. Recrystallization from methanol to yield 36.2 g of γ-chloro-4-methylthiobutyrophenone in the form of light yellow prism-like crystals. Melting point: 75°-76° C.
