Procedure
A solution of 50.8 g of 3,4-dichlorophenylacetonitrile in 250 ml of THF is added dropwise at a temperature below 20° C. to a suspension of 12 g of sodium hydride (55% dispersion in oil) in 175 ml of THF and the reaction mixture is stirred for 2 hours at RT. It is cooled to -20° C., a solution of 62.5 g of 1-bromo-3-(tetrahydropyran-2-yloxy)propane in 60 ml of THF is added dropwise and the reaction mixture is stirred while the temperature is allowed to rise to RT. It is poured into a solution of 31 g of ammonium chloride in 1.4 liters of water and extracted with ether, the combined organic phases are washed with saturated NaCl solution and dried over MgSO4 and the solvents are evaporated off under vacuum. The residue is chromatographed on silica using toluene and then a toluene/AcOEt mixture (95/5; v/v) as the eluent to give 64 g of the expected product, which is used as such.
