Procedure

To a solution of (S)-2-[3-(2-amino-1-methylethyl)-2-(3,5-dimethylphenyl)-1H-indol-5-yl]-2-methylpropionic acid ethyl ester (EXAMPLE 1, Step 1B, 0.50 g in 2 mL ethanol) was added 18 mg potassium carbonate followed by the dropwise addition of a solution of 1-ethyl-1-methyl-piperidinium-4-one chloride (513 mg in 0.80 mL water) and the mixture heated to reflux on an oil bath. After 1 hour, the mixture was cooled to room temperature, diluted with ethyl acetate and washed successively with 10% aqueous sodium bisulfate, water, saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate and brine. The organic portion was dried over sodium sulfate, concentrated in vacuo and the residue purified by flash chromatography on silica gel (hexane:ethyl acetate, 7:3) to give the title compound (356 mg).
