A solution of nBuLi in hexanes (6.76 mL, 1.6 M in hexanes) was added dropwise to a solution of (S)-4-((4-bromo-3-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy)methyl)-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane (127; 3.20 g, 9 mmol) in THF (50 mL) at −78° C. over a period of 30 min. After stirring for additional 10 min, DMF (1.4 mL) was added dropwise over a period of 10 min. The resulting reaction mixture was warmed to room temperature and stirred for 30 min. It was then quenched with water and extracted by EtOAc. The combined organic layers were dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was purified by chromatography (petroleum ether:EtOAc=50:1) to afford (S)-4-((2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl)methoxy)-2-(trifluoromethyl)benzaldehyde 128 (2.3 g, 84%).
