A solution of ((2R,3S)-3-tert-butoxycarbonylamino-2-hydroxy-4-phenyl-butyl)-carbamic acid benzyl ester (D103) (31.5 g, 76.1 mmol, 1 equiv) in THF (300 ml) was treated with 4N HCl solution in dioxan (40 ml, 160 mmol, 2.1 equiv). The resulting solution was stirred at room temperature for 2 h then concentrated in vacuo. The residue was triturated with Et2O/iso-hexane to give ((2R,3S)-3-amino-2-hydroxy-4-phenyl-butyl)-carbamic acid benzyl ester hydrochloride (D104) (22.1 g, 83%) as a white solid.
