Procedure
To a solution of O-protected pyridine aldehyde (5.0 g, 19.9 mmol) and TBAF 1 N in THF (1.5 mL, 1.5 mmol) in THF (60 mL) at 0° C. was slowly added trifluoromethyltrimethylsilane (3.4 mL, 20.9 mmol) and the reaction mixture was allowed to warm to RT overnight. The reaction mixture was diluted with water and DCM, extracted with DCM, dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated. The residue was purified by flash chromatography over silica gel (eluting with hexane/AcOEt 8:2) to afford 1.5 g (24%) of b-protected pyridine trifluoroethyl alcohol.
