Procedure

(R)-2-Chloro-1-(2-methyloxiran-2-ylmethyl)-4-nitroimidazole prepared in Example 12 (20 g, 91.9 mmol) and 1-(4-chlorophenyl)piperazine (20.8 g, 0.11 mol) were added to DMF (200 ml) followed by stirring at 70-75° C. for 5 hours. The reaction mixture was allowed to return to room temperature, poured into water, and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phase was washed with a saturated saline solution, dried over sodium sulfate and then filtered. The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (methylene chloride/ethyl acetate=20/1) to afford (S)-1-(2-chloro-4-nitroimidazol-1-yl)-2-methyl-3-[4-(4-chlorophenyl)piperazin-1-yl]propan-2-ol (33.0 g, yield 87%) as a yellow amorphous form.
