Procedure
A stirred mixture consisting of methyl[3,5-dichloro-4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl]acetate (0.32 g), benzaldehyde (0.20 g), sodium cyanoborohydride (0.03 g), methanol (15 mL) and one drop of acetic acid was stirred at room temperature for 5 days. The reaction mixture was concentrated and the residue partionated between ethyl acetate and sodium hydrogen-carbonate (saturated aqueous solution). The aqueous phase was further extracted with ethyl acetate. The collected organic phases were purified on column (silica gel, n-heptane/ethyl acetate, 9:1) to give 0.36 g of methyl[3,5-dichloro-4-(4-benzylaminophenoxy)phenyl]acetate.
