A stirred solution of the title compound from Step D (1.2 g, 2.6 mmol) in 8 mL of phosphorous oxychloride was heated at reflux for 8 hours. The hot reaction solution was poured onto a large excess of ice and 100 ml of ethyl acetate added almost immediately (before allowing all of the ice to melt). After stirring and allowing the remaining ice to melt, the ethyl acetate layer was separated, washed with water, aqueous saturated sodium bicarbonate and brine. Followed by drying over magnesium sulfate, the solvent was removed in vacuo to give a crude yellow oily solid residue. Purification by flash chromatography on silica gel (4:1 hexane/ethyl acetate as eluant) afforded 450 mg of the title compound, a compound of the invention, isolated as a white solid melting at 175–176° C.
