A mixture of intermediate (17) (0.0269 mol) and mercapto-acetic acid (0.0269 mol) in HCl 6N (150 ml) was stirred and refluxed for 2 hours and brought to room temperature. The solvent was evaporated till dryness, yielding 15 g (96%) of [[[2-amino-5-[(4-chlorophenyl)(1-methyl-1H-imidazol-5-yl)methyl]phenyl](3-chlorophenyl)methyl]thio]-acetic acid hydrochloride salt (intermediate 18).
