Procedure
To an ice-cooled and stirred solution of ethyl 2-(p-diethoxyphosphorylmethylphenylaminocarbonyl)-3-phenylpropionate (6.0 g) in THF (30 ml)-ethanol (10 ml) was added dropwise a solution of KOH (0.9 g) in water (10 ml). After stirring at 4° C.-room temperature for 15 hours, the reaction mixture was acidified with 1N HCl, diluted with water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate layer was washed with brine and dried (MgSO4). The organic solvent was evaporated off to yield 2-(p-diethoxyphosphorylmethylphenylaminocarbonyl)-3-phenylpropionic acid (5.3 g, 94%) as crystals. Recrystallization from ethyl acetate-hexane gave pale yellow needles having melting point of 160° to 161° C.
