A mixture of 4.3 g of 4-phenyl-3-pyridinecarbaldehyde [cf. Heterocycles, 14, 813 (1980)], 2.5 g of malonic acid, 0.5 ml of piperidine, and 6 ml of pyridine is stirred at 100° C. for 2 hours. After cooling, 50 ml of diethyl ether is added, and the resulting precipitate is collected. The obtained solid is washed with water and dried to give 3.4 g of the title compound.
