Procedure

p-Toluenesulfonyl chloride (1.11 g, 5.83 mmol) was added to a solution of 6-chloro-4-methylpyridine-2-carboxylic acid (0.50 g, 27.6 mmol) as a known compound in tert-butyl alcohol (16.5 ml) and pyridine (2.4 ml) at room temperature, and the mixture thus obtained was then stirred at the same temperature as above for 22 hours. Thereafter, a solution of sodium hydrogen carbonate (1.22 g, 14.6 mmol) in water (33 ml) was added to the resulting solution, and the mixture thus obtained was then stirred. The solvent was distilled away from the reaction solution under reduced pressure. Water was added to the residue thus obtained, and the mixed solution was then extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer thus obtained was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and the solvent was then distilled away under reduced pressure to obtain the title compound (0.506 g, yield: 76%).
