Procedure

2-Bromo-1-oxo-2,3,4,9-tetrahydro-1H-carbazole-6-carbonitrile (0.1 g, 0.5 mmol) was dissolved in DMF (5 mL) and LiBr (49 mg, 0.5 mmol) followed by Li2CO3 (42 mg, 0.5 mmol) were added. The reaction mixture was heated to 150° C. for 3 h, poured into ice cold water and extracted with EtOAc (3×30 mL). The combined organic extracts were concentrated under reduced pressure to obtain the crude compound which was purified by column chromatography [EtOAc-hexane (3:17) as eluant] to furnish the title compound as a white solid (0.04 g, 40%). 1H NMR (500 MHz, CDCl3, δ in ppm) 11.71 (s, 1H), 10.03 (s, 1H), 8.61 (s, 1H), 7.70-7.66 (m, 2H), 7.58 (d, J=8.0 Hz, 1H), 7.05 (d, J=7.5 Hz, 1H), 6.91 (d, J=7.5 Hz, 1H).
