Procedure
(E)-2-(4-[3-(4-Hydroxy-3-methylphenyl)-3-oxoprop-1-enyl]phenoxy)acetic acid (10.0 g, 32.0 mmol) and urea (5.9 g, 0.10 mol) was suspended in 150 mL of 4N HCl solution in dioxane, and the reaction mixture was heated to reflux overnight, then cooled to room temperature. The resulted mixture was concentrated in vacuo to remove dioxane. The residues were suspended in 100 mL of 2-propanol and heated in a 90° C. oil bath for 10 minutes, then let it cooled down to room temperature by itself. The suspension was filtered, washed with 50 mL of 2-propanol and dried in the air. 4.0 g (35%) of yellow powder was obtained. 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6): δ 10.76 (s, 1H), 8.15 (s, 1H), 8.04 (s, 1H), 7.94 (d, 1H), 7.46 (s, 1H), 7.13 (d, 2H), 7.03 (d, 1H), 7.03 (d, 1H), 4.86 (s, 2H), 2.21 (s, 3H). MS (EI): 353 (MH+).
