Procedure

A mixture of 4-(benzo[b][1,4]dioxin-2-yl)phenyl acetate (270 mg, 1.0 mmol) in MeOH:THF (5 mL:3 mL) and K2CO3 (167 mg, 1.2 mmol) was stirred for 30 min at rt. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure and water was added. The solution was neutralized by dilute HCl and the solid was isolated by filtration, washed well with water and dried to give 175 mg of 4-(benzo[b][1,4]dioxin-2-yl)phenol (77%). MS (ES) m/z: 225.97 (M), 224.93 (M−1); Mp. 137-140° C.
