To a solution of tert-butyl methyl 5-(5-methylpyridin-2-yl)isophthalate in dichloromethane (75 mL) was added 25 mL of trifluoroacetic acid. After 16 h, the reaction was concentrated and dried under vacuum to give TFA salt of the title compound (6.5 g). MS 272.1 (M+1).
