p-Toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate (39 mg, 0.20 mmol) was added to a solution of 2-mesityl-3-pyridinamine (3.9 g, 18 mmol) and α-acetyl-γ-butyrolactone (4.7 g, 37 mmol) in toluene (80 mL). The mixture was heated under reflux for seven days while removing water using Dean-Stark apparatus. The mixture was evaporated, and the resulting crystals were washed with 60% diethyl ether/ethyl acetate, to give the title compound (3.74 g) as white crystals.
