Procedure

20.8 g (86 mmole) 2,5-dihydroxy-β-phenylpropiophenone, 15.4 ml (130 mmole) benzyl bromide and 12.5 g (90 mmole) potassium carbonate were heated under reflux for 3 hours with 200 ml acetone. After distilling off the solvent, the residue was dissolved in ethylacetate and extracted three times with 150 ml each of 2N sodium hydroxide solution. Subsequently the organic phase was extracted with 150 ml 2N hydrochloric acid and then washed with water to neutrality. After that, the organic phase was separated, dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure. The residue was recrystallized from ethanol/acetone (2:1).
