Under argon, to a sodium methoxide solution (prepared from 2.5 g (108.7 mmol) of sodium and 70 ml of methanol) a mixture of 6.1 g (23.7 mmol) of 4-benzyloxy-3-nitrobenzaldehyde and 11.2 g (97.3 mmol) of methyl azidoacetate in 100 ml of methanol is added at 0° C. The mixture is stirred at 0° C. for 5 h, then diluted with 350 ml of water, the precipitated crystalls were filtered off, washed with water and dried to yield 4.93 g (59%) of the title compound. Mp.: 95-96° C. (water).
