437 g of isoprene stabilized with 1.3 g of phenothiazine were added dropwise in the course of 6 hours to a solution of 832 g of 3-chloro-2-methyl-phenol, 74.4 g of 85% strength phosphoric acid and 5.8 ml of water in 1.4 liters of o-dichlorobenzene at 110° C. To complete the reaction, stirring was continued overnight at 110° C. The acid phase was separated off and the organic phase was washed until neutral. Fractional distillation gave 296 g of 7-chloro-5-hydroxy-3,3,6-trimethyl-indan; boiling point: 161°-164° C./11 mm Hg; melting point: 109°-109.5° C. ##STR8##
