Procedure
To a cooled solution of 2-ethyl-4-oxo-4H-pyrido[1,2-a]thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidine-7-carboxylic acid (Example 2), 0.2 g (0.00073 mol), in 50 ml of 2-propanol, is added a slight excess of a solution of dry hydrogen chloride in 2-propanol. After 10 minutes, 500 ml of anhydrous ether is added to the previous solution and the precipitate filtered to give 0.1 g of 2-ethyl-4-oxo-4H-pyrido[1,2-a]thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidine-7-carboxylic acid, monohydrochloride; mp 255°-256° C. after recrystallization from 2-propanol-ether.
