2 Drops of phosphorus oxytrichloride were added to a solution of 282 mg of 2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxymethyl)-3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran and 286 mg of 1-chloro-4-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-butanol in 7 ml of diethyl ether, and the mixture was allowed to react at room temperature for 4 days. At the end of this time, 3 drops of triethylamine were added, the solvent was evaporated off and the residue was purified by column chromatography through silica gel eluted with a 30:5:1 by volume mixture of hexane, benzene and ethyl acetate, to give 441 mg of trans-6-(2,4-dichlorophenoxymethyl)-2-[1-chloro-4-(chlorophenyl)-2-butoxy]tetrahydropyran as a pale yellow liquid comprising a mixture of isomers in a ratio of about 1:1.
