Procedure
A solution of 2-benzylthio-4,6-dimethyl-5-bromopyrimidine (5 mmol) and 85% m-chloroperbenzoic acid (15.9 mmol) in dichloromethane (100 ml) was left at room temperature for 3 days. The solution was then shaken with saturated Na2SO3 aq. (3×15 ml), saturated NaCHO3 aq. (3×10 ml) and the dried MgSO4 solution evaporated to leave the sulfone; yield 94%, m.p. 138°-139° C. (iPrOH). 1H NMR (TFA): δ2.83 (Me), 4.93 (CH2), 7.33 (Ph).
