Procedure
Sodium triacetoxyborohydride (51 g) was added to a solution of 1-cyclopropyl-2-hydroxyethanone (16.0 g), benzylamine (17.5 ml) and acetic acid (9.15 ml) in THF (300 ml) keeping the temperature at 25-30° C. After stirring for 24 hours the mixture was evaporated, treated with saturated sodium bicarbonate (250 ml) and extracted with ethyl acetate (10×200 ml). The combined organic extracts were dried (sodium sulphate) and evaporated. The residual oil gained was purified by flash chromatography (Silica, Merck 9385), eluting with DCM:ethanol:ammonia (967:30:3 to 945:50:5) to give 2-aminobenzyl-2-cyclopropylethanol (10.63 g).
