A mixture of 3-iodo-7-azaindazole (25.50 g) and K2CO3 (41.4 g) in DMF (200 mL) was heated to 85° C. and t-butyl chloroacetate (14.3 mL) was slowly added. The mixture was stirred at this temperature for 1 hour (h), cooled to room temperature followed by the addition of water (300 mL). Filtration of the reaction mixture provided (3-iodo-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridin-1-yl)-acetic acid tert-butyl ester.
