Procedure

A solution of sodium ethoxide, prepared by adding solid sodium (420 mg, 18.2 mmol) into ethanol (20 mL), was added to a solution of 2-(4-chloro-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)propanenitrile (2530 mg, 13.0 mmol) in ethanol (4 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred at 70° C. for 3 h. 1H NMR analysis of the reaction mixture showed desired product. The mixture was used without further purification. 1H NMR (500 MHz, CDCl3) δ 1.30 (t, 3H), 1.75 (m, 3H), 4.19 (m, 2H), 4.86 (m, 1H), 7.47 (s, 1H), 7.52 (s, 1H).
