Procedure

SiCl4 (3 g, 17.6 mmol) was dissolved in CH2Cl2 (75 mL) and triflic acid (10.6 g, 70.7 mmol) was added dropwise. The mixture was stirred at room temperature over the weekend. The solvent was removed and 4.8 g of brown liquid was collected. 19F NMR (DMSO-d6): δ-76.4 (intense), small broad peaks at -77.8 and -77.95.
