Procedure
7-Methoxy-4-chloroquinoline(13 g, 67 mmol) was refluxed for 24 hours with 47% hydrobromic acid (30 ml). After allowing to cool, aqueous solution of saturated sodium bicarbonate was added for neutralization and the resulting crystals were filtered. The obtained crystals were washed with water, sufficiently dried and recrystallized from ethanol to obtain 9 g of 4-chloro(bromo)-7-hydroxyquinoline [a mixture of 4-chloro-7-hydroxyquinoline and 4-bromo-7-hydroxy-quinoline (7 : 3)]. This mixture was used without further purification as the starting material in a next reaction.
