5-(1-Ethoxycarbonyl-1-methyl-ethoxy)-2-methyl-1H-indole-3-carboxylic acid benzyl ester (6.88 g, 16.5 mmol, 1.0 eq) was dissolved in THF (16 mL), followed by LiOH (0.395 g, 16.5 mmol, 1.0 eq) in H2O (16 mL). The reaction mixture was refluxed for 24 hours. Another equivalent of LiOH was added, and reflux was continued for another 24 hours. The reaction was then judged complete by TLC in hexane ethyl acetate 1:1. 5.0 g of the product was obtained, 84% yield (crude).
