17 g of 3-[2-(2,4-Dichlorophenyl)-ethoxy]-4-methoxy-benzoic acid methyl ester were dissolved in 200 ml of MeOH:water/3:1. 4.1 g of lithium hydroxide monohydrate was added to the solution, and the reaction was stirred at RT for 16 h then at 90° C. for 2 h. The solution was cooled to RT, then acidified with half-concentrated hydrochloric acid. The solvents were removed under reduced pressure and the residue was washed twice with warm water to remove salts. The so obtained acid was used for the subsequent reaction without further purification.
