Procedure

To a solution of 30.4 g of 3,4,5,6-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride in 150 ml of dimethylformamide is added 11.0 g of sodium methoxide. After 1/2 hour this mixture is introduced into the sodio-acetophenone solution. The resulting mixture is stirred at 120° for 3 hours; the solid precipitate is filtered off, washed with acetone and ether, and dried to yield the crude disodium salt of 2-benzoylacetyl-1-cyclohexenecarboxylic acid.
