First, 4 g (0.1 mol) of NaH as an oil was added to 100 mm of dried DMSO, forming a mixture. Into this mixture, 17.4 g (0.1 mol) of diethyl methylmalonate was dripped, while being stirred on an ice bath. Then, 13.4 g (0.1 mol) of 1-chloro-4-methylhexane was added to the resultant mixture and reacted with it at 70° C. for five hours. thereby obtaining 26 g of crude diethyl 4-methylhexylmethylmalonate (II).
