Procedure
To a solution of benzazepine 3 (7.20 g, 19.6 mmol) in formic acid (2.3 g) was added 37% benzaldehyde (1.8 g). The mixture was heated to 90°-100° C. for four hours. After cooling the reaction mixture to room temperature, 4N hydrochloric acid solution (5.16 mL) was added. The mixture was condensed to dryness under reduced pressure. The residue was dissolved in water and then made basic with 25% sodium hydroxide solution. The mixture was extracted three times with dichloromethane. The combined organic layers were dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was evaporated to obtain a solid which was purified by column chromatography (silica gel; CH2Cl2 :MeOH:NH4OH;95:5:1) to give 4, 6.0 g (80%): mp 116°-118° C.; FT-IR (KBr)λ1500, 1380, 1270 and 1060 cm-1 ; 1H NMR (CDCl3)δd 7.65-7.35 and 7.21-6.90 (AA'BB',4H, ArH'), 7.13 (S, 1H, ArH #6), 6.38 (S, 1H, ArH #9), 4.40-4.10 (m, 1H, CH), 3.70 (S, 3H, OCH3), 3.10-2.45 (m, 6H, (CH2)3), 2.37 (S, 3H, NCH3). Anal. Calcd for C18H19BrCINO: C,H,N.
