Phosphorus trichloride (15.2 g) was added to the solution of benzhydryl 7-phenylacetamido-3-[2-(2-pyridyl)vinyl]-3-cephem-4-carboxylate-1-oxide (trans isomer) (22.2 g) in dimethylformamide (220 ml) at -30° C. and the solution was stirred at -30° to -25° C. for 10 minutes. The reaction mixture was poured into cold water (1 l) and resulting precipitates were collected by filtration. The filtrate was dissolved in ethyl acetate (300 ml) and the ethyl acetate layer was washed with brine, dried over magnesium sulfate and evaporated to give benzhydryl 7-phenylacetamido-3-[2-(2-pyridyl)vinyl]-3-cephem-4-carboxylate (trans isomer) (15.9 g).
